An artist’s agent is someone who helps an artist manage and promote their career. These agents act as a link between the artist and people who might want to work with them, such as galleries, publishers, or brands. They negotiate deals, find opportunities, and support the artist’s needs.
To become an artist’s agent, you need great communication skills, a good understanding of the art world, and the ability to help artists connect with opportunities and navigate their careers.
An artist’s agent needs a mix of education, skills, and industry knowledge worldwide. While formal education varies, a background in business or arts management helps. Essential skills include strong communication, negotiation, and networking abilities. Knowledge of the art market and the specific artist’s style is crucial. Business savvy, including budgeting and contract negotiation, is important for managing the commercial side of the art world. Successful agents have a passion for the arts, adaptability to market changes, and a commitment to advancing their artist’s career.

Hi I could use your help! I am becoming an assistant/agent to a family friend who is an artist. I don’t know where to begin. What is the best place to catalog his work. Should I just use drop box or something like Art Cloud? Thanks so much
Hi Julie, If you are just an assistant, I would let the artist direct you on how he would like his work catalogued. If you are expected to lead this, I would reach out to other artists agents to see how they do it. I’m just an art teacher, so not the best person to ask!
how can I get started on being a successful art agent?
By taking advice from the article above!
