For best value, click the subscribe button above to access this and all of my online professional development for one annual price.

Objectives:

In this training, I’ll introduce you to the fascinating and creative world of zines. Together, we’ll explore:

  • The History of Zines: Discover key milestones, influential moments, and the cultural context that shaped zine-making through the years.
  • Hands-On Techniques: Learn simple, effective methods to create your own zines—perfect for immediate use in your teaching.
  • Creative Exploration: Experiment with diverse approaches to zine-making as we create three unique zines during the session. Who knows? This could be the beginning of your very own zine collection!
  • Zines in the Curriculum: Understand how zines can be a powerful tool for incorporating issue-based work into your lessons, encouraging students to engage with important topics creatively.

Once you have watched the professional development, you will be able to download a certificate that includes your name, the name of the course, and the duration to evidence PD hours. Although the video is 34 minutes long, the duration/PD hours on the certificate is 1½ hours to allow you time to complete the tasks within and consider how you will integrate what you have learnt into your teaching.

This course is ideal if you teach mixed-ability classes and want to introduce some issue-based work into your curriculum.

Materials Required: Scissors, craft knife, stapler, some old packaging for a cover, glue. You also need to print the accompanying resources that become available when you purchase. You will need these to complete the tasks within the course.

Reviews

  • Highly recommend!

My name is Elena and I teach middle school art in Washington state.
This video includes a thoughtful , engaging and comprehensive history of zines, followed by a hands-on workshop to make several types of zines! Make sure you have enough time set aside, and be sure to print the zine templates before you get started!

I took notes furiously, which is so rare for me. All that is to say, I was enthralled and I’m so excited to do more work with zines. Thank you especially for linking articles on how youth are aware and fired up about social issues.

This workshop was an absolute 10/10 for me. I can’t thank you enough.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
