Description

Photopea Identity Silhouette

This Photopea Identity Silhouette project guides students through photographing a profile portrait & meaningful objects, then using Photopea to create a striking silhouette composition with a clipping mask. No prior digital expertise is needed – everything is broken down step-by-step, making it perfect for independent learning. A powerful way to explore identity while building confidence with digital tools & composition skills.

Photopea is a free website that lets you edit pictures and is a good, inclusive alternative to Adobe Photoshop.

You need no knowledge of Photopea or Photoshop, as the comprehensive instructions have everything a student needs.

Students need no experience and will learn how to:

  • Use photography to capture a profile portrait and a collection of objects that represent their identity.
  • Use Photopea to turn a portrait into a clear silhouette.
  • Use a clipping mask to place their object-photograph inside the silhouette shape.
  • Create a digital artwork that visually communicates aspects of your identity.
  • Optionally, make connections to a range of artists who represent identity through objects in their work.

Included in this download:

  • A 7-slide presentation with objectives, helpful examples and glossary.
  • A 3-page written unit or work that includes 6 stages to deliver this project, including an introduction, optional artist research, photography, digital work, plenary/reflection and keywords.
  • A 4-page instruction packet that includes step-by-step images and instructions. (Print this double-sided or make available to your students privately online)
  • A one-page ‘Introduction to Photopea’
  • A prompt list for objects that reflect identity with 100 suggestions.
  • A list of artists who use objects to reflect identity in their work.

If you like this Photopea Identity Silhouette, you’ll love the other digital art lessons available on The Arty Teacher website.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
