Develop students’ observational drawing skills with this classroom-friendly life drawing session from The Arty Teacher. Display the video on a large screen for whole-class drawing, or use it with individual students or small groups working independently.
This session features Jane in a series of 5 poses that see her transition from standing to crouching. This is an excellent first life drawing session for students as the poses aren’t too short and are designed to build confidence in drawing the human figure through sustained observation. Suitable for secondary/high school students, the video can be paused or used in real time, making it ideal for classroom teaching, homework or independent practice.
Pose timings:
Students work quickly during the shorter poses, focusing on gesture, proportion and movement, before slowing down to develop greater accuracy, structure, tone and detail in the longer studies.
Whether you’re introducing figure drawing or helping students refine their observational skills, this session provides a structured and engaging way to practise drawing from life.

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.
I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.
I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
