Description

Iznik Tiles Radial Symmetry Painting

During this Iznik Tiles Radial Symmetry Painting project, students will:

  • Research Iznik tiles to understand their origin, motifs, colours, and use of symmetry.
  • Design a range of radial symmetry patterns inspired by Iznik motifs.
  • Use drawing, geometry, and painting techniques to create an aged Iznik-style artwork.
  • Reflect on and evaluate their work.

This is an ideal project if you wish to include some Islamic art or pattern work in your curriculum.

This project gives you access to three videos that you can use to teach yourself or directly with your students. The bulk of the learning is in these videos. They are:

  • Using a Compass to Design (7:32 mins)
  • Aging and Coffee Staining Your Paper (1.15mins)
  • Creating & Tracing Your Iznik Pattern (4.49mins)

  • A 7-slide PowerPoint presentation, pictured above.
  • A Google Slides version of the presentation, view-only link for quick, browser-based use (perfect for Chromebooks)
  • A 4-page written unit of work, including the following stages: Introduction, research page, compass work, Coffee Staining Paper, Designs, Painting and Assessment. Also included are many homework ideas.
  • A one-page Iznik tiles handout to inspire designs.
  • A one-column assessment rubric for assessment or self-assessment.
  • 3 pages of Iznik patterns. These are for adding oil pastel transfer to the research page, which is optional.

Materials required: Paper, compasses, instant coffee, tracing paper, pencils, scissors and masking tape. You can choose to use watercolour (as I do in the example) ink, or gouache.

There are many more painting and complete units of work on The Arty Teacher website.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
