I Wonder… Creative Art Prompts for Imaginative Writing
Rather than formally analysing ‘The Wounded Angel’ by Hugo Simberg, this handout asks for a creative response. Each prompt starts ‘I wonder…’ which enforces the idea that there is no one correct answer. Example statements would be ‘I wonder… what sounds I would hear if I stepped into this artwork and what I would smell’ and ‘I wonder… how the people in this artwork feel’.

Hugo Simberg (1873–1917) was a Finnish symbolist painter known for his dreamlike and often mysterious imagery, blending folklore, fantasy, and deep symbolism. His artworks, such as The Wounded Angel, are rich in narrative ambiguity, making them ideal for imaginative writing as they invite viewers to interpret their meaning and create their own stories.
Combine The Arty Teacher’s creative ‘I Wonder…’ tasks with structured Elements & Principles formal analysis resources for a complete, balanced approach to teaching art analysis.
Awesome images and content just like in the pictures.

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.
I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.
I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
