Drawing portraits is on most art curriculums. These 4 pages of ‘features of the face’ can be used as a sub lesson or will really advance your students drawing within a portrait project. They make beautiful sketchbook pages.
I have updated these to be more culturally diverse and to include a wider age range.
It comes with two lessons plans. One for working in pencil and one for working in coloured pencil. Ideal if you want to teach facial features.
There are other portrait art resources on The Arty Teacher.
Clear images with enough contrast for my SEN artists to pick out enough of the shadows to work using just two or three tones if that’s where they’re at. The differentiation is subtle enough that ones at lower and upper KS2 don’t feel like they’re being given ‘easy’ images and my more able ones get to find a challenge.
Best of all, there is no text. The sheets are focussed and allow me to direct how they tackle those blank spaces they choose to fill first, and the pupils who can’t read yet aren’t put off by any writing.
I start by getting my artists to make a list of the shapes they can see and, if they’re really struggling to see light and dark, a thresholded print of their little image on an overlay helps them see their dark point and light point.

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.
I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.
I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
