Description

During this ‘Drawing X-Rays’ task, your students will use white pencil on black paper to first create a tonal value scale and then create a detailed, tonal drawing. They will be supported by the step-by-step images in the presentation and inspired by the exciting range of x-rays that are included.

Using white pencil on black paper, students will:

  • Create a tonal value scale with a white pencil on black paper to explore contrast and control of light and dark.
  • Apply tonal range and the reversal of light and dark to give depth, contrast, and realism to an X-ray style drawing.
  • Practice observational drawing with accuracy and detail by studying and recording the structures within X-ray images.
  • Use white pencil effectively to represent highlights, mid-tones, and subtle tonal variations in a final refined artwork.

Included in this download:

  • A 12-slide presentation to guide and support your students. This includes lesson objectives, step-by-step instructions of hands, plus inspiring images of a neck X-ray drawing.
  • The presentation is also available as a Google Slides presentation, view-only link for quick, browser-based use (perfect for Chromebooks)
  • 9 X-ray images, pictured here.
  • A one-column assessment rubric which could be used by you, the teacher, or for self-assessment.

Drawing X-Rays is one of the many drawing art lessons on The Arty Teacher website.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
