Student will:

  • Learn about the artist Kurt Schwitters through research and practical work.
  • Learn how nets can be used to create an object with form.
  • Explore card construction techniques whilst making a three-dimensional beetle.
  • Develop a greater understanding of collage through experimenting with cutting, assembling, and layering card and collage materials.

Included in this download:

  • A 43-page PowerPoint presentation that introduces students to the lesson objectives, Kurt Schwitters, includes a mock-up of a research page and then shows step-by-step how to construct and collage a beetle.
  • A written unit of work. This is brief (2½ pages) but useful to see how to plan the different stages of the projects. It includes an introduction, artist research, first construction, collage, final construction, extension tasks, optional homework tasks and assessment.
  • A net for the beetle.
  • Two pages of beetle images to inspire the collage.
  • A one-column rubric for assessment.
  • A page of Schwitters-inspired collage pieces to supplement the paper trash your students collect.

Materials required: Cardboard, masking tape, scissors, glue, recycled paper such as magazines, tickets, paper bags etc.

Reviews

  • Cardboard Beetle Project

We are starting this project next week and I can’t wait. The kids are excited and my ppt is ready to go. They are upper levels so they will have to chance to make adaptions to the designs or create their own net. The ppt included leads us through each step in a clear and fun way. I had trouble (which I learned was from my end) and the customer support was so kind and encouraging with suggestions that eventually led to being able to open and use the ppt. They didn’t have to stick through it with me all of the way but they did right to the end. Thank you tons. I will be back!

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
