Process: Collage, Coffee and Coloured Pencils

By The Arty Teacher - July 27, 2020

I’m delighted to share with you this lovely experimental, step-by-step work created by Mrs Williams from Cromwell Art Department. Using collage, coffee and coloured pencils, Mrs Williams has created this artwork of ‘Rupert’ the cockerpoo for her sister. This would be a great process for students to follow, in lockdown or in the classroom.

Firstly, Mrs Williams has placed down some collage of old envelope. Then, painting with directional brush strokes, she has used coffee to paint the first layer. She has used different strengths of coffee to create different tones.

Below, she has added another piece of collaged envelope that creates a balance with the first piece of collage.  Just one piece of collage may have looked odd on its own.

Working with coloured pencils she starts to draw the fur.  Each line carefully describes the direction of the fur.

She keeps building up numerous lines to create the texture and many colours of the fur.  In some places she allows the coffee brush marks to show without pencil detail on top.  The simplicity of the pieces of collage and coffee brush marks contrasts effectively with the detailed pencil work.

The colours of the envelope and coffee work well with the colours in the photo of Rupert.  You could apply this process of using collage, coffee and coloured pencils to all sorts of artworks.
