Description

This Photopea Hannah Höch Digital Collage task teaches your students some of the fundamental skills in Photopea whilst making strong links to the artist’s work.

Photopea is a free website that lets you edit pictures and is a good, inclusive alternative to Adobe Photoshop.You need no knowledge of Photopea or Photoshop, as the comprehensive instructions have everything a student needs. This makes an easy lesson for you, or is an ideal task for homework.

Students need no experience and will learn:

  • Two methods to cut out images to create a transparent background.
  • How to create a new document.
  • How to add, move and resize images.
  • How to use layers to modify and rearrange elements within a design.
  • To experiment with the opacity of layers.

Optional ‘Further Learning’ tasks encourage students to explore Photopea further push their creative boundaries.

Included in this download:

  • A 4-page instruction packet that includes step-by-step images and instructions. Print this double-sided or make it available to your students privately online. (See below)
  • A one-page ‘Introduction to Photopea’
  • Access to 50 appropriate images in a Google Drive to create the collage. They can also use images that they find themselves.
  • Two good examples that show possible outcomes.

Important: This lesson assumes students are familiar with the work of Hannah Höch.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.
