Perspective and Depth

This engaging lesson teaches students how to use one-point perspective and gradated shading to create the illusion of depth within a grid of nine squares. It develops key skills including accurate ruler use, understanding vanishing points and applying tonal shading.

You have options. You can use the PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to guide students to draw their own lines, or you can use the worksheet provided that has the lines in place for a quicker lesson.

Included in this download:

  • A 4-slide PowerPoint, pictured above, which includes editable objectives and a breakdown of how to draw the lines on the worksheet.
  • A Google Slides view-only link for quick, browser-based use (perfect for Chromebooks)
  • A blank worksheet for students to work on.
  • A worksheet with the lines already in place.
  • The good example, which you can see in the PowerPoint, is on a handout.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
