Description

Card Constructed Homes

Card Constructed Homes, inspired by Japanese sculptural artist Yukihiro Akama. This project is perfect for introducing architecture into your teaching in a creative and accessible way. Constructing sculptures from cardboard offers a cost-effective method to incorporate three-dimensional work into your curriculum, while encouraging hands-on exploration of form and structure.

During this project, students will:

  • Learn about UK-based Japanese artist Yukihiro Akama through research and practical work.
  • Independently make a unique card home inspired by their own photographs and Akama’s work.
  • Experiment with 3D card construction techniques.
  • Explore a range of ways to texture surfaces.

This download includes:

  • A 47-slide PowerPoint that guides students, step-by-step, on how to make a card constructed home. The presentation also includes objectives, an example photography sketchbook page and sketches to inspire construction.
  • A 4-page written unit of work that works alongside the presentation and breaks the project down into stages. The written unit of work includes stages for an introduction, artist research, photography, sketches, construction, decoration/texture, assessment, homework ideas and extension tasks.
  • A detailed assessment rubric.

Your will also need to download the free presentation about artist Yukihiro Akama.

Materials Required: Cardboard, corrugated card, masking tape, gummed tape, PVA/mod podge, polyfilla (aka wall filler), sand, acrylic, brushes.

‘Card Constructed Homes’ is one of many complete units of work that you can find on The Arty Teacher website. There are also other 3D projects.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
